Hello everyone. Those of you who have access to the dark side of my mind know that this post has been in the making for a long time, due to lack of will to open my laptop mostly. But after persevering for about a month, it’s finally ready! I have compiled some moments (aka evidence) to back up my obsession with Tony and Effy from the TV show Skins UK. This post covers season 1 only, because I had trouble with my season 2 torrent, and an unseen video from the same season. I spent a lot of time making gifs for this so the actual writing will be lacking out of laziness. I apologize! Content warning for incest (in my interpretation of events and in the actual text from Skins). Enjoy.
I imagine that everyone knows this by now but for the sake of context: Skins depicts the lives of a few British teenagers, and the protagonist in season 1 and 2 is Tony Stonem. Tony is shown as a sort of leader in his friend group, he’s narcissistic and manipulative (I can’t even source this because half of his scenes are proof) and very charming when he wants to.
The very first scene of the pilot episode is about Tony helping his younger sister, Effy, sneak home in the morning after a night out, as seen below.

Effy getting Tony's attention so that he will distract their parents.

Tony turns up the volume of his music high enough so that their dad doesn't hear Effy coming in.

Mission success. Cute moment.
Also for context, Effy becomes the series protagonist in generation 2 (seasons 3 and 4). In the Skins wikipedia, Effy is described as “rebellious, manipulative, alluring and highly cunning, Effy appears to be a carbon copy of her older brother, Tony, whom she greatly admires and respects.”. Enough said.
One of the main focuses of the first season is Tony’s relationship with his girlfriend, Michelle. Throughout the episodes we see Tony mistreating her, mostly by cheating on her, and sometimes verbally dismissing her. In episode 5 (Sid) Tony kisses Abigail, one of his affairs, in front of Michelle with the excuse that by upsetting Michelle he is giving Sid, who is in love with her, the opportunity to win her heart. Despite everything, they don’t yet break up.
In the following episode (Maxxie and Anwar) the group of friends goes to Russia on a school field trip (crack episode). Throughout the episode Tony bothers Maxxie (who is gay) about wanting to give him a blowjob, and is of course rejected until the very end where Tony pounces on him while Maxxie is in a fragile state due to personal problems. Tony does suck him off, Maxxie tells him he’s terrible at it, and everything is fine except they don’t know Michelle is watching them.
I apologize for so much non-Tony-Effy content but this is all very important. The next episode is focused on Michelle. She learns about Tony’s affairs and confronts him about them in front of everyone, specifically his moment with Maxxie, and then breaks up with him. During this episode Michelle meets and starts dating Josh, who we learn is Abigail’s brother. And because Tony can’t stand losing and not having control over people, he plots to steal Josh’s phone and sends erotic pictures of Abigail to all of his contacts, including Michelle. Michelle breaks up with Josh due to him seemingly being an incestuous freak, but doesn’t get back together with Tony.
And finally… We get to the most important episode of this season: Effy. This is the culmination of all of Tony’s terrible, terrible decisions.
Tony watches Effy walk away.

Tony wears Effy's socks so their parents will think she is asleep in bed.

Sid shows up with the car and takes Tony and a passed out Effy to the hospital. The next scene has Effy still unconscious on a hospital bed, Tony and Sid on one side and their parents on the other. Tony’s parents are visibly upset with him since they assumed Tony had given Effy the drugs.
Effy: The only trouble is: no one thought about her brother. She was in a dome, he was on his own. No one thought about him, they just left him. So he sat by her, her brother. He sat by her in the dome. And because lemonade helped her eyesight, she could see him really clearly throught the sides, even though the glass was as thick as a skull. [...] There was no one looking after him, and because he was a little bit stupid he couldn't look after himself. She was having an amazing time in the lemonade but she knew she had to help him.
To finish this section I’m including the two relevant scenes from the season finale. In the beginning of the episode Michelle approaches Effy and attempts to have a conversation with her about Tony.
Michelle: Tony really hurt me, Effy. Why did he do that? Sometimes I think you're the only person in the whole world Tony truly cares about. I thought maybe, maybe he told you why he did that.

So basically, they are in love, or they should be. Tony is consistently portrayed as a narcissist asshole who doesn’t care about anyone except Effy, as we have learned. The next season explores a bit more how Effy feels about Tony, especially after this traumatizing event. They both understand each other the way no one else in the world does, and both characters are sick and twisted in their own ways, which makes incest a viable option to them in my heart.
I don’t usually care about ships this much, but the amount of Text that exists in this show to back up an incestuous relationship drove me insane I can’t lie. I wasn’t able to express and point out everything that I wanted to, but I hope it was enough to convince even one of you LOL. Thank you if you read this and see you in part 2.

And finally… We get to the most important episode of this season: Effy. This is the culmination of all of Tony’s terrible, terrible decisions.
After an incredibly awkward family dinner, Tony helps Effy sneak out. It’s obvious that both the first scene and this one are routine procedures for the siblings, and they also establish that Mr. and Mrs. Stonem are quite protective of Effy.
Tony watches Effy walk away.
Tony wears Effy's socks so their parents will think she is asleep in bed.
Effy meets up with some troublemaker type of teens, and they get caught trespassing private property by the cops. Tony shows up at the police station to pick her up, but another guy claiming to be her brother has already retrieved her. This of course worries him so he attempts to call her, and after getting no return Tony makes Sid steal his dad’s car so they can go looking for Effy.
This is part of the conversation they have after failing to find Effy:
Sid: You know, she may be having a bit of fun, a joke at your expense.
Tony: That's not her style. No, I know Effy. She's cleverer than this. She's the cleverest person I know. I don't know anyone like her.
Next we see Effy at a party with Josh! He and his friend offer Effy a syringe with drugs in it, which she readily accepts. Then we get to witness Effy speaking for the first time in the entire season, and this is what she says before passing out:
Effy: Sometimes I think I was born backwards, you know? Come out of my mum the wrong way. I hear words go past me backwards. The people I should love, I hate. And the people I hate...

Tony freaks out and tries to call an ambulance, however he doesn’t know the address. Josh and his friend take away Tony’s phone and break it, Josh then proposes:
Tony and Sid fight and part ways, due to Tony being an asshole yet again. When he is alone he gets picked up by a guy on a motorbike and taken to the house party where Effy is. He asks for her and Josh points to where she is unconscious on the floor:
Tony freaks out and tries to call an ambulance, however he doesn’t know the address. Josh and his friend take away Tony’s phone and break it, Josh then proposes:
Tony calls him crazy, and they get into a physical altercation where Tony is quickly overpowered. Josh explains that since Tony made everyone think he fucked his sister, it’s only fair that he makes Tony actually fuck his! Very reasonable. Josh undresses Tony and makes him beg and cry until Josh is satisfied, then lets the siblings go. This entire episode is incredibly important because it shows that Tony’s character development will only happen when what is most dear to him, Effy, is affected by his decisions.
Mrs. Stonem: Tony, she's your little sister.
Tony: I know. But listen for a second-
Mrs. Stonem: No. I've had enough of listening to you. We all have. You and your horrid little ways, always at other people's expense.
Sid: Hang on. That's enough.
Mrs. Stonem: What?
Sid: He loves Effy. Don't you think this is hard enough?
This is the first time we really see this family dynamic in more depth, and it shows that Tony’s parents have been aware of his “bad” personality for some time now. To further this point I will attach some of Effy’s dialogue from her unseen video “Pop”. In “Pop” she tells the story of a girl who needs to drink lemonade to survive, so her parents trap her in a dome full of lemonade so she will always be healthy.
You can interpret that she’s talking about her overprotective parents, who have given her too much attention and put her under scrutiny since her childhood, and ignoring Tony in the process. It also shows how much she loves and cares about Tony.

Michelle: Tony really hurt me, Effy. Why did he do that? Sometimes I think you're the only person in the whole world Tony truly cares about. I thought maybe, maybe he told you why he did that.
The episode ends with [drumroll] Tony getting run over in front of Effy.

Date: 2022-03-16 05:36 pm (UTC)so glad to have real estate in your twisted mind, i've been looking forward to this post so much. it's literally sooooooo trueeeeeeeee that being the only people who truly understand each other is the most romantic thing in the world, and the tacit unspoken communication that goes with it, knowing that the other person will understand and that you're in sync... i died... there was this one wanky tumblr post about how important platonic sibling relationships are so important or whatever but the op was waxing poetic about how "you were born knowing each other" LIKE THAT IS SOOOOOOO SHIPPY and feels like exactly what's going on with tony and effy. and the sameguyism on top of that is also super extra romantic, but how everyone's perception of effy is different than their perception of tony smacks of gender so hard BC THEY'RE THE SAMEEEEEEEEEE BUT ONLY THEY CAN SEE IT.
omg i'm super inspired to write my siscon ani to brocon imouto post now too 🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝 i just know i have to reread a bunch of manga chapters and relisten to some of the drama tracks so i can source quotes and timelines and stuff, so i've been putting it off but I KNOW YOU WILL GET IT!!

excited for part 2!
